userguiding alternatives, for when cheap and cheerful stops fitting

UserGuiding is the tool a lot of small SaaS teams start with, and for good reason. the question is what you do when your product grows a shape it can't follow.

tl;dr (too long, didn't read)

UserGuiding is a budget-friendly onboarding tool for web SaaS, starting at $174 a month billed yearly. its big gap is that it doesn't support native mobile apps.

if you need mobile, look at Appcues or Pendo. if you want to spend even less, Product Fruits starts at $111 a month billed annually. for more analytics and growth tooling, Userpilot or Chameleon.

if what you really want is fewer "how do i" questions, HeyTappr lets users ask and then talks them through the real screen, on the web and on Android.

why people go looking

UserGuiding is usually the first onboarding tool a small team buys. it's cheap enough to expense, there's a 14-day trial with no card and a 30-day money-back guarantee, and it covers the basics in one place: product tours, checklists, a resource center, and lately an AI assistant that comes with 50 free resolutions. for a web app with a handful of people on the team, that's a sensible place to start.

people start looking elsewhere for one of a few reasons, and the most common is mobile. UserGuiding doesn't support native mobile apps. the day your product ships an iOS or Android app, your onboarding stops at the edge of the browser, and you either run two tools or leave mobile users on their own.

the second reason is growth. the Starter plan is $174 a month billed yearly and begins at 2,000 monthly active users. Growth is $349 a month, and past that it's a custom Enterprise quote. that's fair pricing, but a product that grows quickly climbs those steps fast, and at that point teams tend to compare it with tools that have deeper segmentation or analytics for similar money.

when you should just stay with userguiding

if your product lives in the browser, your team is small, and the job is classic onboarding (a welcome tour, a setup checklist, a help panel), UserGuiding is hard to argue with on value. most of the alternatives below cost more, and the extra money buys things you may not use yet.

switching also has a cost people underestimate. every tour and checklist you've built has to be rebuilt somewhere else. if your current flows work and your users finish them, that's worth a lot more than a feature you saw on another pricing page.

the alternatives worth looking at

Appcues, when you need mobile

Appcues is the most direct upgrade for a team that has outgrown the browser. it has mobile SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, and Ionic, and a mature no-code builder for flows and checklists. it doesn't publish a price, but plans start with Start (up to 3,000 MAU) and there's a free trial with no card. see appcues alternatives.

Product Fruits, when you want to spend less

Product Fruits starts at $111 a month billed annually for 1,500 MAU, which undercuts UserGuiding. it's also the only other tool we found that advertises voice onboarding, though voice conversations are metered on the higher plans. native support mentions iOS and not Android, so check that against your app before you commit.

Pendo, when analytics matter more than tours

Pendo is analytics first, with guides on top, and it has broad mobile SDK coverage. the free plan goes up to 500 monthly active users, which makes it easy to try. paid tiers are custom-priced by MAU, and the analytics are deeper than anything in UserGuiding. see pendo alternatives.

Userpilot or Chameleon, for growth teams

if you're running onboarding experiments and want analytics in the same tool, Userpilot starts at $299 a month for up to 2,000 MAU, with native mobile as a paid add-on. Chameleon starts at $279 for 2,000 MTU and is very customizable, but like UserGuiding it has no native mobile support. see userpilot alternatives and chameleon alternatives.

HeyTappr, when the problem is stuck users

heytappr does one thing UserGuiding's tours don't try to do. instead of guidance you schedule, the user asks for help in their own words. heytappr picks the guide your team approved for that question, talks them through it out loud, and spotlights each real button on the live page, moving on when they click. questions without a guide get logged for your team. it runs on the web with one script tag and in native Android apps. it doesn't replace a checklist or a resource center, and if those are what you need, keep them.

how to decide in five minutes

if you have or are about to have a native app, rule out anything web-only first. that leaves Appcues, Pendo, Userpilot with its add-on, Product Fruits on iOS, and heytappr on Android.

then look at what's actually going wrong. if new users don't finish setup, you need better onboarding flows, and Appcues or Userpilot will serve you well. if you can't tell what people do in your product, you need analytics, which means Pendo. if users get going fine but keep emailing support to ask where things are, that's a different problem, and it's the one heytappr was built for.
