for comparison, userpilot saas product metrics benchmark reports an average of 1 day 12 hours. compare it with your average, not your median.

median, average, and the long tail

time to value is the gap between signing up and the first moment the product does something real for someone. the median is the typical user. the average is pulled up by the few who wander off for two weeks and come back. the 75% figure tells you how long it takes most people, which is often the most honest number to put in front of a team.

the distribution matters more than any single figure. if most people get there in an hour and a stubborn group takes days, you don't have a slow product. you have one step that a subset of users can't get past.

the benchmark

the Userpilot SaaS product metrics benchmark (checked September 2026) reports an average time to value of 1 day 12 hours. since it's an average, compare it with your average, not your median.

shortening it

the slow group is usually stuck on the same screen. the onboarding funnel calculator helps find which one, and our piece on user activation rate covers the path to a first win. when someone is stuck on that screen, heytappr lets them ask and walks them through the real buttons, which is often the difference between an hour and a week.

questions

What is time to value?

How long it takes a new user to get their first real result from a product, measured from signup to the first-value event you define, such as a first report generated or first invoice paid.

Should I use the median or the average?

Look at the median for a typical user, because a few people who take weeks drag the average up. Use the average when comparing with benchmarks that report an average.

What is a good time to value?

Shorter is better, and it depends on the product. Userpilot's SaaS product metrics benchmark reports an average time to value of 1 day 12 hours.

What formats can I paste?

One user per line: a duration like 36h, 2 days, 1d 4h or 90m (a bare number means hours), or two timestamps separated by a comma, signup first and first value second.
