what is

intent matching

in one line

intent matching is working out what a user is trying to do from their words and routing them to the right answer or flow.

intent matching takes a free-form request, like "how do i get my data out", and figures out which known task it corresponds to, like exporting a report. it's the step that turns natural language into a specific action.

older systems matched keywords, which broke as soon as users phrased things differently. modern intent matching uses language models to understand meaning, so "download my stuff" and "export to csv" can land in the same place.

the key design question is what happens after the match. some systems generate a fresh answer. others route to a fixed, pre-approved response, which is more predictable.

where heytappr fits

heytappr uses ai only for intent matching. it picks which of your approved guides fits the question, using live page context, and never writes its own answer. with no match, it says so and logs the question.
